Bleeker, 1857
Chaetodon xanthurus also commonly referred as the Pearlscale Butterflyfish, Philippines Chevron Butterflyfish or Yellow Tail Butterflyfish is distributed around the reefs of the western Pacific Ocean from Indonesia and the Philippines, north to the Ryukyu Islands. The Body is pearly white; scales have black edges, giving the sides a reticulated pattern instead of the chevrons in similar species.
The Pearlscale Butterflyfish is found in clear coastal to outer reef slopes and drop-offs. Found around staghorn corals (Acropora). Closely related to, and often confused with, three other butterflyfish: Chaetodon mertensii found further east in the Pacific ocean, Chaetodon madagaskariensis found in the Indian ocean, and Chaetodon paucifasciatus found in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Chaetodon xanthurus in the wild are found either alone, in pairs, or in small groups, however they are territorial towards similar looking species and may harass them in the Aquarium. They may be compatible with butterflyfish that bear no resemblance to them, but there is no guarantee that their relationship will be successful.
Remarks:
Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
Synonym: Chaetodon xanthurus Bleeker, 1857
Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Percoidei (Suborder) > Chaetodontidae (Family) > Chaetodon (Genus) > Chaetodon xanthurus (Species)
