Info

Chaetodon lineolatus, also known as the lined butterflyfish (His Hawaiian name is Kikakapu) is one of the largest butterflyfishes. This species can get up to 12 inches (32 cm) in size. They are found near areas of heavy coral growth on reef slopes and sometimes travel in groups, pairs and in singles, but are very seldom seen on the open reefs.

If you can even find them in your local shop (even if rarely caught for the trade), you may want to pass on this butterfly fish. Their potential adult size and their eating habits would keep them out of most aquarium setups.

The lined butterflyfish is a coral eater, feasting on soft and stony coral polyps and mushroom anemones.

Remarks:

Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.

Husbandry know-how of owners

Indo-w.Pacific; 30 cm; very common
Small specimens to young adults common in our area; greatly similar to the relative C.oxycephalus, from Indo-Australian Archipelago and Kerama Islands, Okinawa; one of the largest members in the genus; I saw a gigantic fully-grown adult at the depth of 2 meters in Hanauma Bay, Oahu but it disappeared immediately among rocks; very easy to keep
