Info

Lutjanus erythropterus is an overall pink or reddish colored tropical snapper, including the fins, sometimes with a darker edge on the caudal fin and a light vertical stripe behind the head.
Juveniles have a broad, diagonal black band extending from the mouth over the eye to the beginning of the dorsal fin, as well as a large black spot on the caudal peduncle (often saddle-shaped) and sometimes fine red stripes on the side.

It is probably tied to deeper, muddy habitats, but is occasionally seen by divers schooling over reefs and wrecks less than 20 meters deep.

Lutjanus erythropterus mainly hunts for zooplankton at night.

This snapper species is fished commercially.

We would like to thank Adam Kopper, iNaturalist, for the first photo of a live purple snapper!
