Juveniles are found in shallow coral rubble, adults in isolated coral heads of lagoon and seaward reefs to depths of 82 m.

Feeds mainly on sand-dwelling fishes and crustaceans, sometimes on octopuses

Reports of ciguatera poisoning exist.
