Special thanks to Cameron from Dive & Relax PADI 5 Star Dive Resort #36148 Diving, Snorkeling, PADI Courses & Private Charter, Koh Lanta, Krabi, Thailand, for the first two photos of living damsels.

Pomacentrus damselflies are typical inhabitants of tropical marine environments, reef environments, especially in the Indo-Pacific, although some species also occur in fresh and brackish water (Neopomacentrus aquadulcis, Neopomacentrus taeniurus, Pomacentrus taeniometopon, and Stegastes otophorus) and a number of species live in cooler temperate seas, e.g., around Australia and New Zealand.

Pomacentrus taeniometopon lives singly or in small groups in lagoons, mangrove shores, harbors, coastal reefs, and outer reef slopes, often among branching alcyonaria.
They are also found in mangrove bays, sometimes in freshwater, brackish water lagoons, and shallow reefs exposed to freshwater runoff.
In pure freshwater, the species can be found far upstream.

Pomacentrus taeniometopon feeds primarily on benthic algae.

The damselfish has a dark brown to almost black body with a pale tail. the top of the head is neon blue in color and there is an oval eye spot on the posterior dorsal fin.
