Info
Sphyraena pinguis and its synonym Sphyraenella chrysotaenia (Klunzinger, 1884) were long recognized as two distinct species; however, only Sphyraena pinguis is scientifically accepted.
The yellow-striped barracuda is one of the smaller barracuda species, but it is a fast and successful hunter that preys on various types of zooplankton.
The species is very widely distributed and, as a Lessepsian migrant, has found its way into the Mediterranean via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
This small species poses no danger to humans.
