Back in 2014, Jean-Marie Gradot from La Reunion (French overseas department in the Indian Ocean) posted a photo of this strikingly colored pelagic fish.
Like Jean-Marie Gradot, François Libert, co-author of the book "Découvrir la vie sous-marine mer rouge, Océans Indien et Pacifique:" also suspected a temporary mating dress coloration (wedding dress).
Dr. Ronald Fricke, an expert on fishes of the western Indian Ocean, confirmed that this is indeed a hybrid of two Abudefduf species, a rare phenomenon among these two fish species.
