Hippocampus nalu, a new species of pygmy seahorse from South Africa, and the first record of a pygmy seahorse from the Indian Ocean (Teleostei, Syngnathidae).

Das Pygmäenseepferdchen Hippocampus nalu lebt auf flachen Sandkorallenriffen bzw. sandigem Boden mit zum Teil starker Brandung. Sie bevorzugen niedrigen / kurzen Algenrasen.

Bei den adulten Tieren ist eine netzartige Tarnfärbung von Honigbraun am Kopf, Rumpf und Schwanz ist vorherschend, dazu kommen noch unregelmäßige Flecken in Weiß sowie einem roten Rumpfring. Bei juvenilen Tieren ist eine braune Grundfärbung vorhanden.
