Lysmata moorei was first described in 1901 on the basis of xxxx specimens, a recent description and photographs of the species were published in "A revision of the Brazilian species of Lysmata Risso, 1816 (Decapoda: Caridea: Lysmatidae), with discussion of the morphological characters used in their identification".

The color pattern of the eastern Atlantic specimens of Lysmata moorei is illustrated here for the first time and also shows some intraspecific variation.

Lysmata moore was named after Dr. H. F. Moor, the Albatross naturalist who accompanied the Fish Hawk on its voyage to Porto Rico, during which the shrimp was first described as Hippolysmata moorei Rathbun, 1901.
