Info

Cantor, 1849

Special thanks for the first photo of Variable sabretooth blenny to Ditch Townsend from GB.

Adults occur in seagrass beds of shallow lagoons and also in Sargassum rafts during or immediately after wet season.

This species feed primarily on small crustaceans and occasionally on scales from fishes.

Petroscirtes variabilis is replaced by Petroscirtes thepassi at Solomon Islands.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
