Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Leptoseris kalayaanensis are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Leptoseris kalayaanensis, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Leptoseris kalayaanensis, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Husbandry

Licuanan & Alino, 2009

Very special thanks for the first photo of Leptoseris kalayaanensis to Dr. Bert Hoeksema, Naturalis Biodiversity Center; Department of Marine Zoology, this photo was taken at Vietnam.

The original description of Leptoseris kalayaanensis came from Prof. Dr. Wilfredo Roehl Licuanan and Dr. Perry Alino in 2009.
Three corals were found in a depth of 15 meters at Kalayaan Island Group, Philipinnes.

Mr. Phan Kim Hoang (Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography, Vietnam) has collected another colony
at 27–28m depth at the south reef of North Danger Reef in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea on on a steep reef slope.

This coral is characterized by unique solid spines all over its encrusting surface!
The spines are three to five mm apart and are usually found either on concentric ridges
near the middle of the corallum, or on radiating ridges near the colony margin.

The species is named after the Kalayaan Island
group, near Palawan province in the western Philippines, in which the type locality is found.

Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Cnidaria (Phylum) > Anthozoa (Class) > Hexacorallia (Subclass) > Scleractinia (Order) > Agariciidae (Family) > Leptoseris (Genus) > Leptoseris kalayaanensis (Species)
