Info

Istiblennius steindachneri (Pfeffer, 1893)

This blenny can be observed in its habitats both in fairly shallow water zones and above water, on flat rocky cliffs.Since the blenny can stay out of the water for a while, the rock skipper is considered a facultative air breather, hence its very English colloquial name “rockskipper.”

Istiblennius steindachneri is a harmless algae and aquatic plant eater, but little is known about its biology.

Etymology:Named after Franz Steindachner (1834–1919), an Austrian zoologist, ichthyologist (fish expert), and herpetologist (amphibian and reptile specialist).
He was curator and later director of the Natural History Museum in Vienna and described numerous new species of fish and amphibians, many of which were named in his honor.
