Info

Pelagella joubini (Risbec, 1928)

This species appears most commonly in literature and on the internet as Goniodoris joubini, but it is possible that an earlier name is Goniodoris aspersa. Between 60 and 70 specimens of this species have been found on Enewetak, Bikini and Kwajalein atolls.

The specimens were between 6 and 17 mm long and were mostly found on lagoon reefs and sea stacks under dead coral. The largest specimen, measuring 17mm, was found attached to a pole under an old pier on Medren Island in Enewetak Atoll. Pelagella joubini was first reported as Goniodoris joubini by Johnson & Boucher (1984) in the Marshall Islands of Enewetak, Kwajalein and Bikini Atolls.

Pelagella joubini is dark brown with white spots. Some white and off-white spots are larger and often have a yellow center. The mantle is bordered by a broad transparent white band, sometimes flecked with yellow and dark brown.

Pelagella joubini probably feeds colonial ascidians.
