Adult species of Southern pompano inhabit coastal areas with reefs or rocky outcrops in a depthrange of 20 to 50 meters.

These large fishs are found normally in pairs on reefs, but may also be solitary or form schools.

This species also occour in brackish water.

Diet: mollusks (mussels) and crabs!
