Info

This is not real coral, but a related species – a hydrocoral.
It is a colonial animal consisting of individual organisms, each with its own feeding and defense system.

Hydrocorals normally only grow in the deep sea, but in the fjords of southwestern New Zealand, red coral grows there in very large numbers.

As the species name suggests, these sessile animals, which live in reefs with a continuous current, have a light brownish color.
There are no size specifications for this species in the literature, so we wrote to Damian Brouste in New Caledonia and asked for his experiences.

Hydrocorals grow very slowly, and their growth is easily recognizable by the light-colored tips, as with many stony corals.

Synonym:
The species name “rrunneus” comes from Latin and means brown; the name refers to the overall brown coloration of the species.
