On page 59 of his initial description in ‘The shallow water gorgonians of New Caledonia and adjacent islands (Coelenterata: Octocorallia)’, Dr Grasshoff noted that the colour of living coral is lemon yellow, but of course, colours are as subjective as tastes.
The colours of marine animals are influenced by, among other things, the time of day, the incidence of light, the strength of the camera flash used and possible reflective backgrounds.
For this reason, the species name ‘citrina’ was chosen, derived from citrinus = lemon yellow.
Around Caledonia, Villogorgia citrina forms dense populations in some places and the colonies often form anastomoses.
Further reports: Villogorgia cf. citrina Grasshoff 1999 from Sulawesi, Indonesia (Sonia J. Rowley)
This gorgonian appears to be much more widespread than previously thought (Indian Ocean, Indo-Pacific).
A similar species is Villogorgia compressa Hiles, 1899.
Our very special thanks for the first photo of this beautiful gorgonian go to Dr Pierre-Louis Stenger.
