Info
Villogorgia nozzolea was first described in 1996 by Dr. Grasshoff from the waters around New Caledonia, but unfortunately the original description is not available.
In 2019, the azooxanthellate coral was reported from Eilat in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, and in 2021 from Mayotte, Western Indian Ocean, although it is quite conceivable that this beautiful fan gorgonian will also be reported from other regions in the future.
Experience has shown that marine organisms found in Mayotte are often also reported from the Comoros, the Seychelles, and Mauritius, so it remains exciting.
iNatuarlist shows photos from Palau, Fiji, Egypt, the Philippines, Sulawesi, and Indonesia, but we have not been able to find any scientific evidence in the form of first records of Villogorgia nozzolea from ... for these, but these may follow.
Color: dark red with white polyps; from a distance, the coral appears orange.
Our special thanks go to Dr. Pierre-Louis Stenger, who kindly provided us with his photos taken around New Caledonia. Great!
