Info
Panulirus japonicus is a resident of reef crevices in exposed rocky coasts.
The ground color of the body is a dark brownish red. The overall impression of the animal is that this color is uniform.
There may be some small and inconspicuous light spots on the carapace. An often inconspicuous light longitudinal stripe is visible on each side of the carapace.
The supraorbital horns are dark red on the inside with a sharply defined, very narrow, pale stripe along the front edge; the outer surface of the horn is similar, but with the addition of a pale stripe that starts at a point near the center of the horn base and widens distally, sometimes taking up almost the entire front half of this outer surface.
The red color of the horn is either uniform or has some, usually inconspicuous, pale spots.
The abdomen is uniformly dark red in color, except for the often very distinct white spots at and just behind the joints of the abdominal somites, and there are usually no spots on the upper side of plate D (see “A revision of the Indo-West Pacific spiny Lobsters of the Panulirus Japonicus group”, page 9).
Small pale spots may be present, but they are so rare, unobtrusive and scattered that they are only visible on close inspection and do not detract from the general impression that the abdomen is a uniform color.
The legs are the same color as the body
A rather narrow, uninterrupted, pale line extends the entire length of the dorsal margin of the merus, carpus and propodus.
A similar line is found on the ventral margin of these segments, while both sides of the merus and carpus and propodus have two such narrow, pale lines on the merus and one on the carpus and propodus.
Although the dorsal line is always distinct and uninterrupted, the other lines are often interrupted and sometimes barely discernible.
Panulirus japonicus is a heavily fished crustacean for human consumption in the countries where it is found.
Panulirus japonicus does not feed when water temperature was less than 11.8°C (CABI Compendium).
