Info
According to Grasshoff's initial description, the color of living corals is “pale yellow,” the tentacles are brown, but orange colonies are also identified as Nicella magna; see also LAPGON in the further links.
The large fans of Nicella magna reach up to 50 cm.
The branches are somewhat flattened and the raised polyps form round mounds in dried material.
The gorgonian occurs in three growth forms: flabellata, carinata, laxa.
The species lives on the outside of the reef in the southwest of New Caledonia, at great depths of 55-70 meters and more on the reef slope.
Nicella magna has also been found on the slope of Pilot Island, Lataroa, east of Esapiritu Santo, Vanuatu, at a depth of 40 meters.
Etymology:
The species name “magna” comes from Latin and means “large,” referring to the size of the colony.
