Info

Costasiella fridae Fernández-Simón & Moles, 2023

Etymology: This species was named in honor of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo because her iconic eyebrows resemble the distinct black, oval band behind Costasiella fridae eyes.

Description: translucent white back; Mouth milky white, converging in the middle of the eyes; distinctive oval, black band behind eyes and rhinophores. Rhinophores cylindrical, bulbous when disturbed; upper two-thirds opaque white. Cerata moss green, innermost white; contains white, blue and yellow iridescent spots, especially on larger cerata; Ceratal tips whitish.

Confusion: Specimens with similar coloring have been found throughout the Indo-Pacific. The distinctive black oval band behind the eyes is a diagnostic feature of @lat, as is the white spot around the mouth area.

Feeds on Avrainvillea sp., lives on these and also lays their spawn on these algae.
