Eurynolambrus australis H. Milne Edwards & Lucas, 1841
The carapace is triangular and broad and extends laterally, covering the base of the legs. The scissor arms are long, the surface is coarse, rough and pitted. The walking legs are flattened and have irregular tips. The claws have purple fingers, the inner surfaces are white.
The color of the carapace ranges from dark red-orange and irregularly mottled white to grey-brown. The antennae are pale yellow, the eyestalks often deep red above and pale below. The legs are mostly white, mottled orange and dark red.
The triangle crab is endemic, found throughout New Zealand, including Stewart and Chatham Islands.
A coastal species found on rocky, muddy shores, moderately exposed shores, occasionally under boulders covered in coralline algae (Corallino officinolis), and in large, low tide pools. Also occurs offshore (inner shelf), often in association with bryozoans. Tides up to 80 m.
There is a possibility of confusion with juvenile Metacarcinus novaezealandiae.
