The large sea anemone Homostichanthus duerdeni was formerly known as Stichodactyla duerdeni for a long time.
The inhabits seagrass beds formed by Thalassia testudinum, a seagrass of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, often between 0.5 and 2 meters deep, in the reef zone of lagoons.
Usually the body column is completely buried in the sand, while the pedal disk clings to buried rocks or shells.
It has been reported to live in symbiosis with Periclimenes rathbunae Schmitt, 1924, Thor amboinensis (De Man, 1888), and Thor manningi Chace, 1972 (Mercado & Capriles, 1982; Ritson-Williams & Paul, 2007).
Color: olive green to pale green oral disc, yellow or scarlet lips, body column pink proximally and silvery gray distally, tentacles green to yellow or brownish, and pedal disc pale pink and translucent.
The oral disc can reach a diameter of 15 - 20cm.
