Info
Special thanks to Jim Greenfield, UK, Britisch Marine Life, for the first photo of Swiftia dubia!
Swiftia dubia is a small gorgonian found along the coasts of Europe and the Mediterranean.
The Northern Sea Fan is usually about 10 cm tall, but can grow to twice that size.
The gorgonian is usually white, but can be gray and occasionally has a hint of pink.
Usually found at depths of less than 15 meters, it lives on cliffs, rocks and boulders where there is a reasonable tidal current.
The coral polyps feed on small organisms that they catch as the water flows through the fan.
They are often found among cup corals, which are clearly visible in this photo.
The coral has often been found with other slow growing species that are prone to disturbance such as the gorgonian Acanthogorgia hirsuta.
Synonym: Stenogorgia dubia Thomson, 1929 ·
