The coral is only from Datan Algal Reef, Taoyuan, Taiwan, is the only place where this species is known; there is a species-rich coralline algal reef.
Erythropodium taoyuanensis is one of the predominant sessile organisms encrusting the rocks at this site, and is generally restricted to near the low tide line and may be exposed to the air during the spring low tide.
Etymology
The species name "taoyuanensis" refers to the name of the city of Taoyuan where the specimens were collected.
