The Saddleback gunnel is a medium gunnel found along the western coast of North America. This gunnel is an elongated eel like fish with a brown and tan pattern.
Dietary shifts correlated with age. Juvenile gunnel feed mainly on small crustaceans (copepods) and polychaete worms. Older fish switch to clam siphons, relying less on small crustaceans (copepods).
Spawns in rocky intertidal or deeper sea grass beds under rocks in winter. Both male and female guard the eggs.
Synonymised names:
Pholis ornata nea Peden & Hughes, 1984
