Girella zebra is a harmless algae and aquatic herbivore, it inhabits shallow rocky reefs, sandy and weedy flats, but is also found in estuaries.
It is easily recognized by its yellow fins and the eight dagger-shaped stripes on its body.

Girella zebra is often found in schools of 5-30 individuals on shallow, sheltered reefs, especially near boulder fields.
