Info
North of the Hawaiii archipelago lie the Musicians Seamounts, deep-sea mountains in the North Pacific named after famous composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart.
On the Mozart Seamount, at a depth of 3,659 meters, the holotype of a deep-sea gorgonian was discovered and collected with the help of an ROV between basalt spheres.
Unfortunately, only its width is known of the coral, which was about 31 cm wide, and the colony had a slightly bushy appearance.
The initial description of the coral was based on collected fragments, the largest of which was 20cm.
With its downward facing polyps and multiple branched nodes, Calyptrophora carinata is most comparable to Calyptrophora wyvillei Wright & Studer, 1889, a widespread species known from New Zealand to the Hawaiiian Islands.
At the time of discovery what a white anemone attached to the colony near its main stem.
