Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Penaeus californiensis are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Penaeus californiensis, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Penaeus californiensis, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Penaeus californiensis, Holmes, 1900

The Brown Shrimp are light brown to reddish brown in color with yellowish legs. They are dimorphic with females (25.0 cm) being larger than males (16.0 cm).

These species can be found on muddy and sandy bottom in brackish 26 ° C.

They are short-lived with life spans between 1 and 2 years. Penaeus californiensis feed primarily on the green microalgae, Ulva clatharata.

Brown Shrimp are the most important commercially harvested shrimp from the Sea of Cortez and often used by recreational anglers as an exceptional live bait targeting a wide variety of fish.
