Brachysomophis cirrocheilos is widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea included, and of the western Pacific Ocean.

The stargazer snake eel inhabits the sandy and muddy bottoms close to coastal. It is a nocturnal species.
