Husbandry

Smith & Radcliffe, 1912 / Pietsch & Arnold, 2017

Very special thanks for the first photo of a living Nudiantennarius subteres to the marine biologist Daniel Geary, atmosphere resorts & spa, Philippinnes and Prof. Dr. Theodore (Ted) W. Pietsch, University of Washington, USA for his friendly and helpful recommendation!

A little miracle is seen - more than 100 years have passed, since a single specimen of frogfish was first trawled from 82 metersdepth in 1909.
Some times later, this species was described as Nudiantennarius subteres.
In 2017 Antennarius subteres was redecribed by Pietsch & Arnold https://doi.org/10.1643/CI-17-651 and a few photos of ths mystic and superrare frogfish were taken.

Nudiantennarius subteres is unique in several ways, caused by reduced dermal spinules the Lembeh-frogfish appears naked.
Nudiantennarius subteres is high color variable, from orange, pink, blue, violet, with, yellow and brown, with and without ocelles.
Refering to Pietsch & Arnold, morphological and molecular analyses indicate a close relationship with the Sargassumfish, Histrio histrio (Linnaeus, 1758).

Nudiantennarius is a monotypic genus with one species: Nudiantennarius subteres.
