Aplysilla rosea (Barrois, 1876)
The pink sponge seems to be more common in aquariums due to the use of live stones. When the hardness level of the water is too low, the sponge shows a spiny appearance.
We suspect that it is Aplysilla rosea, but this is not completely certain due to its occurrence in nature. An exact determination can only be made by experts under the microscope.
Taxonomic note from WoRMS: Aplysilla rosea is a species from the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean.
Habitat.
Caves, rocky/detritic/muddy bottom, hyperhaline channel (Manfredonia, Italy), artificial reef, coral community and epibiotic on red corals and on Pinna nobilis.
Synonyms:
Verongia rosea Barrois, 1876 (genus transfer).
