Distribution:
Indo-Pacific: Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Seychelles; Ryukyu Islands, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Ponape [=Pohnpei], Fiji, Tonga and the Marshall Islands.

Found in shallow water along edges of steep outer reef and lagoon slopes. Found singly or in groups.

Distinct black bar on the edge of the preopercle, and nearly, scaled breast.
